I might be a little biased because this is our tool, but I built it specifically to solve all the horrible problems the other sites have. It is 100% fundamentally free. There is zero catch.

The Good: First off, it features on-device AI. That means when you hit the "Remove Background" button, the AI script runs right inside your web browser. Your photo is never uploaded to a cloud server, meaning your facial biometric data is utterly secure. It also allows you to manipulate Indian dimensions (like the 2.5x3 cm Aadhaar size) and then exports entirely print-ready A4, A5, and 4x6" PDF layouts for free.

The Bad: Because the AI runs purely on your device, if you are using an incredibly old smartphone from 2013, the background removal might take a few seconds longer since it uses your phone's processor.

This is one of the oldest web tools on the internet. It's incredibly basic, but it still functions if you just want raw dimensions without any magic.

The Good: It is relatively lightweight. You select "India Passport", upload the photo, and crop it. It does generate a downloadable 4R photo sheet that you can print.

The Bad: It looks like it was designed in 2004. More importantly, it does not have an AI background remover. You absolutely must take the photo against a perfectly white wall, otherwise you're stuck with whatever messy room you shot the photo in.

This tool pops up very high on Google and presents a really attractive interface with plenty of country options.

The Good: Massive database of country specifications. If you need a visa for an obscure nation, they probably have the crop ratios automatically programmed in. You can also manually adjust brightness and contrast.

The Bad: The tricky paywall. You can download your photo for free, but if you want to utilize the AI background removal feature (which is honestly the most important part of taking it at home), they hit you with a paywall just before you download the enhanced version.

Canva isn't actually a passport maker, but so many people use it as a workaround that it deserves a mention on this list.

The Good: You have immense control. You can create a custom design size (like 3.5x4.5 cm) and drop your photo into it. If you have Canva Pro, the background remover is arguably the best cloud-based masking tool in the world.

The Bad: You have to manually build the print grids. The "Canva Pro" background feature costs a monthly subscription. It's too complex and absolutely overkill if you just need a quick application photo.

Probably the slickest software aside from Canva. The AI is startlingly good, swapping outfits and smoothing out details.

The Good: The background generation and ability to add a "virtual suit" onto your body are technically astounding.

The Bad: The pricing model. You get very few free credits (sometimes only one attempt), and if you make a mistake, you have to purchase more credits to download High-Definition formats. A standard HD passport layout sheet shouldn't require microtransactions.
